Motivation

Dear …

My name is Siobhán Daly. I am currently studying as a first-year student at ITESS, to become an International teacher for secondary schools. My main subject field is History. I am currently looking for an internship where I can do my first- year teaching practice, which will start in February for two weeks and then again in May for another two weeks, which I hope to do in Haren.

I think of myself as a very social-oriented and hard-working person. I have been raised bilingually by my parents. My mother is Dutch, and my father is Irish. One of the benefits of their decision is that it makes it easier for me to communicate with people from any other English-speaking country.
While in secondary school, I found that I enjoyed art, and as I wanted to work with children, I decided to become a teacher in arts and crafts for secondary school. I studied this course for three years but found that it was very restrictive and did not motivate me anymore as it is only results orientated and does not allow for the students to enjoy the subject. I decided to stop after my second internship in the third year.

At the International school, UWC, in Maastricht, I have done several community clubs "arts and crafts" as a substitute teacher for the toddlers. Since being in contact with them, I got very interested and wanted to apply for a job there straight after graduating from college.
However, after quitting at the Art Academy, it did not seem realistic anymore.

History was my second choice when it came to teaching. I was always very interested in the roots of people and their (social and cultural) backgrounds. In order to understand people, I feel you need to understand where they are coming from. During my time studying art, I had to study its History as well, which made it easier for my to keep active in the subject.

Teaching is something I enjoy incredibly, especially being able to do this at an international level in a couple of years. After the first few months here at ITESS, I got into contact with people from different countries and with different perspectives on topics such as political, educational and the influences of cultural and social backgrounds to children. I came to understand things such as critical thinking and its importance. And how to teach this to students in different subjects, such as History. This is something I never got to experience during my previous internships. ITESS made me more excited into becoming a teacher.

As mentioned before, I gained much experience working with children between the age of 13 to 18, while studying a teacher's agree in Arts. As an intern, I have learned how to prepare a class and gained basic knowledge of young adolscent behaviour.  This experience gives me a good head start for my future at ITESS.

If there are any questions, I could reply by email, or be happy to visit you at the schools' location, being able to see me in person.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Siobhán Daly
